Celexa or citalopram is an anti-depressant which belongs to a group of drugs collectively called SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It works through the restoration of the balance of serotonin, which is a naturally occurring substance in the brain that affects the mood of an individual.

Aside from treating depression, Celexa can also be used for other medical conditions which are not listed in this guide.

Important Information about Generic Celexa

Celexa or citalopram should not be taken with a MAOI or a monoamine oxidase inhibitor such as isocarboxazid or Marplan, phenelzine or Nardil, rasagiline or Azilect, selegiline or Eldepryl and tranylcypromine or Parnate. You would need to wait for at least 14 days after you stop taking an MAOI before starting to take Celexa and you would need to wait for at least 14 days again after you stop taking Celexa before you can start taking an MAOI.

Before taking Celexa, inform your doctor of any drug allergies you have as well as if you have liver or kidney disease, epilepsy or seizures, bipolar disorder or manic depression, and if you have a history of having suicidal thoughts or drug abuse.

Celexa belongs to the FDA pregnancy category C. Many SSRI anti-depressants could cause serious lung problems in newborn babies who were born to mothers who took the medication when they were pregnant. It is important to inform your doctor if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or are breastfeeding. This medication should not be administered to any patient who is below 18 years of age without seeking the advice of a physician first.

Possible Side Effects of Generic Celexa

Some of the possible side effects of Celexa or citalopram would include drowsiness, sleep problems or insomnia, upset stomach, mild nausea, weight changes, frequent urination, decreased sex drive, impotence, dry water mouth and symptoms of a cold such as sneezing and stuffy nose. These are usually only temporary and would go away eventually; however, if they do not or if they worsen, make sure to inform your doctor right away.

Some of the rarer and more serious side effects of Celexa would include rigid muscles, sweating, high fever, fast and uneven heartbeat, overactive reflexes and tremors. If you experience any of these while taking Celexa, make sure to get emergency medical assistance.
