Lexapro or escitalopram oxalate is a drug that is used for the treatment of major depression, which is characterized by a persistently low mood which interferes with the daily functioning of an individual. Lexapro works through boosting the serotonin levels in the brain. This medication is a chemical relative of the anti-depressant citalopram. Some other anti-depressants which work through raising the level of serotonin would be fluoxetine, sertraline and paroxetine.
Important Information about Generic Lexapro
Lexapro should not be taken within two weeks before or after taking any MAOI drugs. Combining such drugs with Lexapro could cause serious reactions that are marked with symptoms like fever, twitching, rigidity and agitation.
You should not take Lexapro if you are allergic to escitalopram oxalate or to any other similar drugs. Lexapro may interact with other drugs including aspirin, carbamazepine, cimetidine, ketaconazole, desipramine and anti-depressants, painkillers, tranquilizers and sedatives. It is important to inform your doctor if you are taking any of these drugs or other medications.
Inform your doctor if your are pregnant or are trying to be pregnant or are breastfeeding as Lexapro may have an effect to an unborn child or to a nursing baby.
Dosage and Administration of Generic Lexapro
Lexapro should be taken as prescribed even if you begin to feel better before the recommended period of treatment is over. Although improvement starts within a couple of weeks, the treatment usually continues for several months. It comes in tablet and liquid form and could be taken with or without food intake.
If you miss a dose, just take as you remember but if the next dose is about to come up, just forget about the missed dose and take the next one and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at once to make up for your missed one.
Lexapro overdose could be fatal. If you suspect an overdose, make sure to seek emergency treatment as soon as possible. Some symptoms of overdose include sweating, dizziness, nausea, tremors, vomiting, drowsiness, seizures and rapid heartbeat.

Some of the side effects of Lexapro include decreased appetite, constipation, diarrhea, decreased sex drive, dizziness, ejaculation disorder, dry mouth, flu-like symptoms, fatigue, impotence, headache, insomnia, indigestion, runny nose, nausea, sinusitis, sweating and sleepiness.
